PAYMENT OF DAMAGES

 

DAMAGE TO BUSES

 

Remuneration to bus operators for damages to buses caused by students shall be made in the following manner:

 

  1. It shall be the responsibility of the bus operator to obtain three written estimates on the cost of repair for bus damages.
     

  2. The bus operator shall submit three estimates to the principal responsible for the student/students involved.
     

  3. The bus operator shall use the lowest estimate.
     

  4. If the lowest estimate is not chosen, the bus operator shall explain to the principal the reason for selecting the higher estimate.
     

  5. If the principal agrees with the operator's decision on an estimate, the principal gives this estimate and a letter to the student to take home to his/her parents for payment.
     

  6. If the principal disagrees with the bus operator's choice of the estimate to be used, the Supervisor of Transportation shall determine which estimate is to be used.
     

  7. The student/students shall bring payment to the principal.  The principal shall deliver the payment to the bus operator.  Copies of the estimate and final payment should be documented by the principal.
     

  8. The bus operator shall inform the principal when work is completed and present a receipt for said repairs. A copy of the receipt shall be forwarded to the involved parents.
     

  9. The following schedule of depreciation shall be used to determine the amount of remuneration for damages to buses by students:

       

 

0-3 years

100% of damage

 

4-6 years

80% of damage

 

7-10 years

70% of damage

 

11 years and above

60% of damage

 

  1.  The above procedures shall not go into effect until all appeals have been heard.

 

Once efforts to recover any damage to a bus have been exhausted by the principal or bus operator, the Supervisor of Transportation shall be notified.  The Supervisor of Transportation shall contact the parents of the students to attempt to resolve the matter within five (5) days of notification.  If unsuccessful, a formal written complaint shall be filed with the Sheriff's Department.
